kheeri

kheeri

I would say this kheeri (cheppe kheeri) is a sweetless payasam.
It is usually eaten with pickles. It is a must-prepare for the Navaratri pooja. My mother regualarly prepares it at home as we grow turmeric leaves and also due to the abundance of coconuts :)

Ingredients

  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Turmeric leaves – 2 small

Method

  • Cook rice till it is soft.
  • Grind the coconut adding sufficient water and keep aside the coconut milk obtained by draining it.
  • Tie the turmeric leaves into knots and set aside.
  • To the cooked rice, add the coconut milk, a little water and the turmeric leaves. Cook for about 10 minutes on a low flame till you get a nice aroma of the fresh turmeric leaves.
  • Sprinkle a little salt when eating. Serve with pickles and any other randayi (konkani curry)

Preparation time: 30 minutes

    Hello,
Nice recipes. I was reading this kheeri recipe and I am not sure this following sentence is related to Kheeri -Grapes (both white and black) can be added to enhance taste and colour. Green chillies can also be used in place of red chillies. In that case, add sugar instead of jaggery.

Thanku Gowri and Shilpa. The last line relating to grapes, sugar and jaggery was a result of copy-pasting from the previous article. I removed it now.
